a vision by G.R. Claveria

What kind of movie could draw an eclectic cast of porn stars, playboy models, theatre actors and foreign pop stars? Seymore Butts and Mari Possa, from Showtime’s Family Business, were just the beginning for award-winning filmmaker G.R. Claveria. For his movie, “a Study In The Orientation Of Han Sum,” Claveria also gathered Playboy model and rising music star Kaila Yu, who is not only in the film but also contributed her track, “Candy Coated Sugar Sex” to the movie’s score. Musical contributions were also made by Will Faeber, international country star, and Claveria’s own band, LeavinGuilty. Persian music star Kia and porn star Sophie Dee also made cameos to discuss their relationship with the movie’s star in this documentary style film.

So, what kind of movie could draw such a cast? Perhaps they, like the filmmakers, wanted to take a crack at unraveling the nature of obsession. "a Study in the Orientation of Han Sum” is G.R. Claveria’s feature length film debut and seeks to understand all the diverse people who are affected by a single porn film. Much like a shooting star, the movie "Measuring Up: The Erotic Way of the Samurai" and its elusive leading man were only brief shining moments on the often stark background of adult entertainment. With a bold sense of humor and unflinching candor, Claveria shows us not only how but why one person at the right moment in history can burn himself into the memories of those who knew him.

Han Sum and Araya Sunshine

The film, “A Study in the Orientation of Han Sum,” is not suitable for children. It is, however, dedicated to one very special baby girl. Araya Sunshine is G.R. Claveria’s only daughter, the youngest his four children, and he has never seen her in person.

“I only have two pictures of her,” says Claveria. “She’s a beautiful little china doll. Looks more like me than any of my boys, but she’s bound to grow out of most of that.” Claveria’s eyes soften and, despite the uncertainty of Araya’s pending custody case, he begins talking excitedly as if she were coming soon for a weekend visit. “Her brothers keep asking about her. I don’t have much I can tell them. When my oldest says, ‘Dad, I want to see Araya. I know she’ll like me.’ all I can say is, ‘I want to see her too, John.’”

When asked how a baby can inspire a morality bending film like, “A Study in the Orientation of Han Sum,” Claveria is up front. “I’m not proud of all my decisions. Being with Araya’s mother was a morality bending time in my life. I felt the porn industry gave me the background I needed to express our relationship, how I felt, what I wanted. Araya has nothing to do with any of that, though. I really did want another son or daughter. Araya was 100% planned.”

What does Claveria mean by when he talks about a morality bending time in his life? “I tried to recreate a lot of those relationships in the Han Sum movie, how I hurt people who cared about me, broke rules, and was really selfish. Among other things, this movie is my chance to say, ‘I’m sorry.’ But more than that, I wanted to tell Araya I love her. No matter how long we both have to wait, I won’t forget her.”
